Romans 6

I just finished Romans 6. I have made out a writing schedule for the year. If I stick to it I will have the New Testament finished by November,

Romans 6

Should we continue to sin
So that grace may increase?
Of course not?
We are those who, to sin, have deceased

How can we live in sin any longer?
We were baptized into Jesus’ death
Therefore we were buried with him
From sin, we no longer draw breath

And just as Christ was raised
Through the Father’s glory
We also live a new life
That is our gospel story

If we have been united with him
In a death just like his own
We will certainly be united with him
In a resurrection like he has shown

Our old self was crucified with him
So that the body ruled by sin
Might be done away with
And it will never master us again

Because anyone who has died
From sin has been set free
Now if we died with Christ
With him we shall live eternally

We know that since Christ was raised
From the dead, he cannot die again
Death no longer has mastery over him
He lives for God, for he died to sin

In the same was, count yourselves dead
Yet in Jesus, to God we are alive
Therefore do not let sin control you
Do not let evil desires survive

Do not offer any part of yourself
As an instrument of wickedness
But offer yourselves to God
As an instrument of righteousness

For sin shall no longer be your master
Because you are under grace
You are no longer under the law
Therefore do not give sin any place

What then? Since we are no longer under the law
Shall we continue to sin? No, I say!
When you offer yourselves to someone
You are slaves of the one you obey

You are either slaves to sin
Which leads to death and destruction
Or you are God’s obedient slaves
And you follow his right instruction

But thanks be to God that
Though you used to be slaves to sin
You have become obedient in your heart
And to his teaching you have devotion

You have been set free from sin
By the only one who saves
Therefore you are new creatures
And to righteousness you have become slaves

I am using an example from daily life
Because of your human limitations
Just as you were slaves to impurity
And to wicked inclinations

Now offer yourselves as slaves
To a righteous and holy way
When you were slaves to sin
Righteousness could not hold sway

What benefit did you reap at that time
From the things of which you are now ashamed?
Those things result in death!
But now God’s freedom you’ve claimed.

The benefit you reap leads to holiness
And eternal life is your reward
For the wages of sin is death
But God’s gift is eternal life in Jesus, our Lord
